CANTO of Shelly Cont.

2.
In Argolis, beside the echoing sea,
Such impulses within my mortal frame
Arose, and they were dear to memory,
Like tokens of the dead:-but others came
Soon, in another shape:the wondrous fame (wondrous,令人惊奇的)
Of the past world, the vital words and deeds (vital,充满活力的; deed,行为)
Of minds whom neither time nor change can tame, (tame,驯服)
Traditions dark and old, whence evil creeds (creed,信仰)
Start forth, and whose dim shade a stream of poison feeds.

3.
I heard, as all have heard, the various story
Of human life, and wept unwilling tears.
Feeble historians of its shame and glory, (feeble,无力的)
False disputants on all its hopes and fears, (争论)
Victims who worshipped ruin, chroniclers (chronicler,记录者)
Of daily scorn, and slaves who loathed their state (scorn,嘲笑; loathe,憎恶)
Yet, flattering power, had given its ministers
A throne of judgement in the grave:-'twas fate, (throne,君王; grave,坟墓; 'twas, it was; fate,命运,运气)
That among such as these my youth should seek its mate.
